  • What is Run to Quit?

    Run to Quit helps smokers quit smoking by learning to walk or run 5 km! The program is for all fitness levels and our simple step by step approach makes it easy to quit smoking and take up a new exercise program. Walking and running can help cope with discomfort and cravings while cutting down and quitting. Run to Quit has two ways to participate: You can Do it Yourself OR get extra support by participating a Run to Quit Training Program. Register for Run to Quit (Do it Yourself or a Training Program) and you will be entered into our contest. Quit smoking for 5 weeks and you could win a $1000! Go the extra step, stay smoke-free and complete a 5 km walk/run event and you will be eligible to win a 2017 Honda Coupe LX or 1 of 13 cash prizes totalling $16,000!   • Who is eligible to enter?

    You are eligible for the contest if you are a current smoker or commercial tobacco user, or someone who quit within the last three months; Have smoked at least 100 cigarettes in your life; Are a resident of Canada and are the age of majority in the province where you applied or older at the time of registration. Note: Contestants are permitted to use nicotine replacement therapies (e.g. patch, gum, inhaler or lozenges) during the contest period. For more details, see Full Terms and Conditions

  • I’m not a runner. What if I can’t keep up to the group?

    Run to Quit is for people of all fitness levels and you do not need to be a runner to participate. The Running Room has a simple step by step approach that makes it easy to learn to walk or run 5 km. Your Running Room Leader will always be there by your side to support you. The program builds up your endurance very slowly and safely. You really can do it! here.

  • Where does the 5 km run walk event take place?

    You can participate in any 5 km organized walk/run across Canada that is at least 5 km in distance. Run to Quit hosts runs in some cities and you can choose that run by visiting our Break Free 5K page. If you would like to find a different 5 km event near you, you can look on RunningRoom.com or search on a local community board near you.

  • Can I compete in a walk or run event longer than 5 km?

    Totally!

  • How do I enter Run to Quit?

  • What if I need help registering?

    If you need help to register, you can call the Running Room toll-free at 1-800- 419-2906 ext. 264 or click the help button at the bottom right corner of the screen. For in person help, you can visit a Running Room store.

  • How will I know if I entered successfully?

    You will be sent a confirmation of your registration to the email address that you provided. The email should arrive within 24 hours of registering. It is possible that our email could go to your junk mail or get blocked by a spam filter. If you do not receive an email, you can confirm that you are registered, by calling us toll-free at 1-800- 419-2906 ext. 264.

  • How much does it cost?

    The cost of Run to Quit is relatively small compared to the health benefits gained and the cost of cigarettes. If you smoked a pack a day and quit smoking, you will save almost $400 a month! Here is the cost of Run to Quit:

  • What if there is no Running Room store in my area?

    In-Store Training Programs will be available in over 50 Running Room locations across Canada in 2017. This number will grow next year. If you do not have an In-Store Training Program near you, you can register for the Virtual Training Program and participate from anywhere. We also have a Do it Yourself option you can join and still be eligible to win prizes.

  • Are people who chew tobacco eligible?

    Yes, the contest is open to all tobacco users who want to quit. To be eligible to win you must quit all forms of tobacco. If your name is selected as a prize winner, you must still be quit at the time of prize awarding.

  • How do you know if I have really quit and am still tobacco free?

    If your name is selected as a potential grand prize winner, we will need to verify your smoke-free status with a urine test that will be arranged to be completed at a location near you.

  • What day of the week does the In-Store Training Program take place?

    In-Store Training Programs will take place on different days of the week in the different store locations. You can check out a store near you to see your local schedule. here The Virtual Training Program can be accessed through your Running Room Dashboard at any time to suit your schedule.

  • Can I bring a friend to the group?

    Having a quit buddy register for the program with you is a great idea! A quit buddy can help you build a good quit plan and help you through difficult times. They will learn how to support you while you quit and also gain the benefits of running. Quit buddies can register here

  • Can I do the Virtual Training Program in less than 10 weeks?

    The Virtual Training Program follows the same format as the In-Store Training Program. It will take 10 weeks to complete. Each week you will receive information in your “dashboard” on the Running Room website with information for that week about quitting smoking and running.

  • Can I have a friend do the 5 km run walk event with me?

    Friends and family are welcome to enter a 5 km fun walk event with you! Or they can show their support of your efforts by making a pledge to the Canadian Cancer Society on your behalf.

  • Is Nicotine Replacement Therapy (eg. : patch, gum) provided?

    When you register, you will receive a confirmation email with a link to a $10.00 discount coupon to use for either Nicorette® or Nicoderm®. Using a quit aid such as the patch, or a quit line can more than double your chance of quitting for good!

  • What if I don’t quit or start again?

    Quitting smoking often takes several quit attempts. If you don’t quit after the 10 week program we encourage you to use the information and resources you have gained to try again when you’re ready! You can also try again and still be eligible for prizes by quitting smoking no later than June 26th, 2017. We do encourage you to join a Training Program and call the National Quit Smoking Line and speak to a quit coach. 1-866-366-3667.

  • What if I am in a wheelchair or have mobility issues? Can I still be part of the program?

    Yes! If you have a physical limitation we encourage you to have a quit buddy to help you make it across the 5 km walk / run finish line! Walk, run or roll your way to better health and maybe even a grand prize!

  • What if my contact information changes?

    If your phone number changes prior to prize winners being announced, please notify us by calling 1-800-419-2906 ext. 264 or by emailing runtoquit@cancer.ca. If your name is drawn as a winner we must be able to reach you at the phone number you have provided.

  • What do you do with the information you collect about me?

    The information you provide is totally confidential. We use it only for the purpose of administering the program and contest, in accordance with the Canadian Cancer Society privacy policy.   • Do I need a doctor’s approval before starting?

    Before starting any fitness program, it is advised that you let your health care provider know. Signed permission forms are not required.

  • Can I use E cigarettes?

    E-cigarettes are not regulated as a nicotine replacement therapy in Canada. As we do not know enough about the nicotine levels in e-cigarettes, using them may produce a positive result in a urine test and you may be disqualified as a winner, even if you did not use tobacco. We do not recommend using e-cigarettes. 

  • How can I bring Run to Quit into my community?:

  • What can I expect in a Training Session?

    Your training program class will be held once a week at the date and time listed on your registration. Each class starts with a 20 to 30 minute group seminar that gives you walk/run instruction and smoking cessation information.  This is followed by a group walk/group run. To complete your weekly training schedule, you are encouraged to join your instructor and others at Run Club on Wednesday evenings and Sunday mornings. These group runs are not mandatory but are highly encouraged.

    It’s important to remember that we do not expect you to run and quit smoking right away!  We provide you with the tools and resources ahead of time to slowly get there.

  • What is Run Club?

    Run Club is a free group run hosted by all Running Room locations on Wednesday evenings at 6:00pm and Sunday mornings at 8:30am (times may vary by location).   Going to these additional group runs will build  up building your ability to walk or run up to 5km by the end of the 10 weeks:  plus the group runs can be fun and motivating.  You are welcome to join in at any  Running Room run club.  Ask for the coach leading the session and tell him / her you are with Run to Quit.  They will help group you with others doing a Learn to Run training.  – not just the one where you are taking run to quit.  Bring along a friend or family since run club is open to all in the community.  You are welcome to you can join on Wednesday evenings and Sunday mornings at a Running Room near you.   If the Running Room near you is offering a scheduled Run to Quit training session ask for the coach.  If they are not simply join the learn to run group and let them know you are with Run to Quit. It is not mandatory to attend but it is highly encouraged in order to build up your endurance. When you arrive there will be a variety of different fitness levels and you are encouraged Going to run club can add to the fun and motivation of building up your walking / running fitness.
