How It Works

What is Run to Quit?

Run to Quit helps you quit smoking by learning to walk or run 5 km! Run to Quit has two ways to participate: You can Do it Yourself OR get extra support by joining a Run to Quit Training Program. Register for Run to Quit (Do it Yourself or a Training Program) and you will be entered into our contest. Quit smoking for 5 weeks and you can win a $1000! Go the extra step, stay smoke-free and complete a 5 km walk/run event and you will be eligible to win a 2017 Honda Civic Coup LX or 1 of 13 cash prizes totalling $16,000! Run to Quit Training Programs

The Run to Quit Training Program will provide you with support from the Running Room and quit smoking experts. You have the option to join a 10 week Virtual Training Program or a 10 week In-Store Training Program hosted at your local Running Room. Your Running Room Leader will provide you with a simple step by step approach to walking or running your first 5 km and support you to quit smoking at the same time. Running Room Leaders are trained by the Canadian Cancer Society to help you achieve a smoke free life. You will also have telephone support from the National Quit Smoking Line where you can speak to an expert quit coach.

Virtual Training Program: $ 49.99 + tax

This program is offered in September 2016, January 2017 and April 2017

In-Store Training Program: $69.99 + tax

This program will be offered in the Spring. Check back in January 2017 for dates and times.

  • Where is Run to Quit happening?

    Run to Quit Training Programs will be hosted throughout the year all across Canada. The Virtual Training Programs are offered in the Fall, Winter and Spring. The In-Store Training Programs will be hosted this upcoming Spring at 50 stores across Canada.

  • How does the In-Store Training Program work?

    The Running Room In-Store Training Program will be hosted in 50 stores across Canada this upcoming Spring. You will attend weekly classes at your local Running Room for a 10 week session. A trained Running Room Leader will guide you and teach you to walk or run 5 km using a gradual and progressive step by step approach. You will receive a training plan for three walk/run sessions per week so you can build up your endurance. Everyone can join this program! You do not have to be fit! You do not need to be a walker or runner! We will be there to help you meet your personal walk or run potential.

    Your Running Room Leader, with support and training from the Canadian Cancer Society, will guide you to quit smoking. You will also have additional support from an expert quit coach from the National Quit Smoking Line.

    An added bonus of the In-Store Training Program is the group support. Your Run to Quit group will include people just like you who are learning to walk or run 5 km while quitting smoking. You will be able to share challenges, stories, tips, successes and set-backs in a safe setting. The group support is a key part of smokers’ success in quitting smoking and doing that first 5 km walk or run together.

    At the end of the 10 week program, the group will participate in a 5 km celebration walk or run together to mark everyone’s progress and success with Run to Quit!

      You will also receive some extra tools to help you quit:
    • Information on quitting smoking
    • Instruction on running and building endurance
    • Free entry to the Running Room Run Club (hosted on Wednesday Nights and Sunday mornings)
    • Use of a personal Running Room Dashboard giving you access to health and fitness information as well as tools to track your journey.
    • Smokers’ self-help booklet (One Step at a Time Guide)
    • Phone, web or text support from the National Quit Smoking Line
    • Coupons for Nicorette or Nicoderm
    • Trial offer of NICORETTE® Gum*

  • How does the Virtual Training Program work?

    The Running Room Virtual Training Program will be hosted throughout the year all across Canada. Once registered, you will have online access to the Running Room dashboard where you will gain access to the Run to Quit Virtual Training Program, pace calculators, discussion forums and your own personal online training log.

    A trained Running Room Leader will send you weekly emails and teach you to walk or run 5 km using a progressive step by step approach. You will get a training plan which includes three walk/run sessions per week so you can build up your endurance.

    Your Running Room Leader, with support and training form the Canadian Cancer Society, will also guide you to quit smoking. You will also have access to additional support from an expert quit coach from the National Quit Smoking Line.

    At the end of the 10 week program, you will be well equipped to participate in a 5 km walk or run event to celebrate your success with Run to Quit!

Are you the type of person who feels confident doing a walk, run and quit smoking program on your own? Then this option is for you! You will receive quit smoking resources and support from our National Quit Smoking Line but the rest is up to you. Register for Run to Quit (Do it Yourself or a Training Program) and you will be entered into our contest. Quit smoking and stay smoke-free and you will be eligible to win a $1000 cash prize.
