We ALL know that being active and living a smoke-free life has tons of health benefits. Everyone wants to be healthy, disease free and be able to play with their kids and grandkids without getting winded. We recognize that starting a new exercise program and quitting smoking is not easy but Walk or Run to Quit works and can help you be your healthiest self!

Physical activity helps with cravings & withdrawal symptoms:
Exercise reduces cravings, helps manage withdrawal symptoms and inspires people to attain better health. Many people struggle with withdrawal symptoms and cravings. We KNOW cravings are frustrating and are difficult to overcome. Walk or Run to Quit will give you tools and resources to overcome these cravings and withdrawal symptoms that are proven. Exercise in itself is actually a natural way to reduce cravings and withdrawal symptoms making them easier to manage and conquer!
The power of a group is a force to be reckoned with! The Walk or Run to Quit In-Store Training Program is a unique get together of people wanting to quit smoking through walking and running. You will meet people who are going through the same exact thing you are. Many of our coaches have been smokers themselves and know what it’s like to quit. You will be able to share frustrations, stories, tips and will help each other quit smoking and walk or run your first 5 km together. Many of our group participants from last year are still running friends and are holding each other accountable after the 10 – week program is complete.
You can also ask a friend or family member to join you and be your quit buddy. Your quit buddy can support you by joining a Walk or Run to Quit Training Program, they can join you for an evening walk and encourage you along the way.
Helps control weight gain:
A big reason many people do not want to quit smoking is the concern they will gain weight. Walk or Run to Quit allows you to offset weight gain by starting a new exercise program. Several of our Walk or Run to Quit participants have struggled with weight and were reluctant to quit smoking. They were pleasantly surprised that at the end of the 10 week program, they were able to quit smoking, did not gain weight and actually lost some pounds along the way!
We have a plan:
We have asked many of our Walk or Run to Quit participants what helped them succeed in the program and they said it was because Walk or Run to Quit had a plan. During the 10-week training program you will be introduced to your plan and will be provided with helpful information on running techniques and quit smoking techniques. Your Running Room Leader will help you write your personalized quit smoking plan and help you set a quit date. The great thing about the Walk or Run to Quit plan is that it’s progressive. We do not want you to jump into running or jump into quitting smoking. We want you to be well equipped with the proper information and be prepared to take the next step.
The program works:
Walk or Run to Quit hosted a pilot program in Ottawa and participants were 7x more likely to quit as compared to the success rate for unaided quit attempts.
Walk or Run to Quit is currently being studied by researchers from the University of British Columbia (UBC) for its potential as a chronic disease prevention program. The success of the program at the end of the 10-week training program and at 6 month follow-up are being measured. Results from the spring 2016 & 2017 rounds are shown in the infographic below.
